Dr. Antonio Jesus Puertas

Academic background in biology, biotechnology, and polymer science, with research experience spanning plant pathology, biomaterials, and antimicrobial nanomaterials. Holds a BSc in Biology and an MSc in Biotechnology from the University of Córdoba (Spain). During the master’s programme, research was conducted at the IAS-CSIC (Institute for Sustainable Agriculture, Spanish National Research Council), focusing on plant pathologies associated with fungal infections. Subsequently completed a PhD in Polymers and Biopolymers at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), specialising in the development of advanced polymeric materials and nanostructured systems for biomedical applications.
Current research focuses on the development of safe-by-design antibacterial and antibiofilm nanomaterials. This work involves the design and engineering of functional coatings for medical devices, including urinary catheters, contact lenses, and biomedical textiles, with the aim of preventing bacterial infections and minimising the emergence of antimicrobial resistance. The research integrates nanomaterials engineering, polymer chemistry, and microbiology to develop innovative surface modification strategies that enhance the safety and performance of biomedical materials.
