Scientific profile

Dr. Olesia Havryliuk obtained her MSc in Biotechnology and Bioengineering at the National Aviation University (2018, Kyiv, Ukraine). She completed her PhD (Biology) in 2022 at the Department of Biology of Extremophilic Microorganisms, D.K. Zabolotny Institute of Microbiology and Virology, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, with an academic scholarship for PhD students provided by the Ukrainian government. Her research has focused on the mechanisms of copper resistance in bacteria and the management of copper-resistant strains. During her PhD studies, she was actively involved in research groups focused on the implementation of national and international projects, including grants from CRDF Global (Civilian Research and Development Foundation, USA) related to heavy metal detoxification by extremophilic bacteria and the development of methods for food waste degradation using hydrogen-producing microbial communities of Clostridium and Bacillus. She also completed a 10-month internship at the University of Prešov (Department of Ecology, Faculty of Humanities and Natural Sciences, Slovak Republic) within the framework of the Visegrad Scholarship Program (2020–2021). After completing her PhD, she received several travel grants from the Federation of European Microbiological Societies, including the FEMS Research and Training Grant, which she carried out at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC-BarcelonaTech, Spain, 2023). After her FEMS internships, Olesia received a temporary contract as a visiting researcher in the Chemical Engineering Department of UPC-BarcelonaTech until the end of 2024. She is currently an MSCA4Ukraine Fellow at the Department of Chemical Engineering of UPC-BarcelonaTech, where she leads the project “AntiMDR-NANO — Next-generation antimicrobial nanostructures to target multi-drug resistant respiratory pathogens” (HORIZON-1245103, 2025–2027), a 24-month full-time fellowship awarded in the funding line for doctorate holders. MSCA4Ukraine is funded by the European Union under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions and implemented by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation on behalf of the MSCA4Ukraine Consortium.
