Kristina Ivanova is an Assistant Professor at the Chemical Engineering Department of  Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. During her PhD and subsequent postdoctoral career at UPC, she acquired extensive expertise in the design, synthesis and functionalisation of nano-enabled materials, including nanoparticles, hydrogels and free-standing membranes, as well as in the assessment of their antimicrobial, antibiofilm and antiviral properties. Her research focuses on engineering advanced biomaterials for healthcare and infection control. She has worked on surface modification, immobilisation of bioactive agents, controlled antimicrobial release, quorum-quenching systems and targeted biofilm disruption strategies.

Dr. Ivanova has participated in 10 international and 3 national projects contributing to the development of  innovative antibacterial materials and smart delivery platforms, as well as 2 academia-industry technology-transfer contracts. Currently, she is principal investigator and international coordinator of SMARTGEL project (PCI2024-153444). She has authored 48 peer-reviewed articles in high-impact journals and 5 book chapters in materials engineering, applied nanotechnology and microbiology. She is also co-inventor of two patents related to targeted and stimuliresponsive nanoparticles and in situ self-assembling of nanocomposite hydrogels. Her contributions in the EU projects PROTECT (H2020 720851) and BIOMAT (H2020 953270) were recognised with five Excellent Innovation Awards from the European Commissions Innovation Radar. At GBMI she currently leads the materials development line, coordinating the design and characterisation of antibacterial nanomaterials, responsive hydrogels and functional coatings against drug-resistant biofilms.
